On Writing Advice
May 8, 2015
There are the general truths of writing about what you know (otherwise you come across like that Emperor and his New Clothes) and not writing to trends (because they'll be long over by the time you hit the shelving cycle)... but the best piece of advice I'd give any writer (or artist, or, well anybody) is write what you love... write what appeals to you, even if it's not what you know, even if nobody else thinks it's interesting (btw: if you love an idea and your people are telling you it's not interesting, find some more people... you are not alone)...
Whether you're writing for yourself, or you're writing for publication, you want to love your story. If you're writing for yourself, you are unlimited and unbound and you should let your words and imagination fly wild. If you're writing for publication, your words and imagination will be tempered by editors, marketing teams, etc... you will revise, rinse, repeat several times... you will become exhausted at times by the process... it is that love of your story that will carry you through THE END.
